The Challenge

Building a multi-organization chat application using custom WebSockets requires hosting a single centralized database and server infrastructure. This centralized model creates data privacy concerns for enterprise users who want to host their own data, and scaling it to support cross-organization communication requires building complex server-to-server syncing protocols from scratch.

Solution & Architecture

We chose the Matrix protocol because it provides built-in server federation, allowing different organizations to host their own servers and data while communicating seamlessly. By using an open standard instead of custom WebSockets, we avoided the high development costs of building server-to-server sync systems and delivered a decentralized chat network.
